The Reclining Lady in White
Nguyen Dieu Thuy
39.75" x 30"

Emerging Vietnamese figurative artist, Nguyen Dieu Thuy paints a wide range of subjects: young girls in traditional white ao dai; rice bowls and chopsticks; groups of small birds; river and waterside scenes which reflect her native environment of south Vietnam. All are distinctive for their calm, peaceful mood and subdued, almost monochromatic palette. Thuy’s unique talent lies in using realistic figurative elements in semi-abstract compositions. Combining pure white and earth tones with a fine sense of line, her paintings seem to capture perfectly the grace and poise of the Vietnamese aesthetic.

Nguyen Dieu Thuy was born in Saigon in 1962 and grew up in a musical family. She studied the violin and after graduating from the Conservatoire de Musique in Saigon in 1988, she worked as a teacher and a violinist in the Conservatoire’s Symphony Orchestra before changing career and becoming a professional artist in 1991.

Thuy’s work is representative of the growing maturity and confidence in the Vietnamese contemporary art scene. Her paintings are carefully executed, with close attention to line, composition and colour. Whatever the subject, every composition has a pleasing graphic simplicity as well an instinctive feeling of balance. Thuy has developed a highly individual and elegant painting style, with an emphasis on white space, giving her work a meditative and soothing quality.
